Spirit Center Construction Progress - June 2009

The Administrative Board on June 7 passed the Building Committee's request to fund a new sound system for Live and a new sound system for the Youth area of the 3rd floor. In addition the youth area will receive a stage, stage lighting, flat screen video displays and a large screen with video projector.

The Administrative Board also approved a number of projects submitted by the Trustees. These include computer based air conditioning controls upgrades of the existing systems, an enlargement of the Choir room, and paving of an additional parking lot near the new Spirit Center.

MusicCraft Sound and Video of Spartanburg was the lower of three bids requested for the sound and video systems.

Work is well under way for the connections for the kitchen, Class rooms in the Gym and passageway between the Gym and the Spirit Center. This is creating some disruption and dust in the Gym but it will be completed soon.

The sheetrock installation is nearing completion in the upper two floors and the elevator is installed. Colors have been selected and painting will begin later this week. Windows are being installed and the Stained Glass window installation will begin this week. The exterior brickwork is completed and really looks good. The interior brick work is almost complete.

Chairs for the Live Service have been ordered and should be here in 12 weeks. The Furnishing Committee did a good job of finding nice chairs at a very good price. Many people had an opportunity to test the various chairs being considered and the chair purchased is one of the favorites.

We have received two quotations to purchase and remove the Youth House so that and an additional parking lot installed as this project is being completed. We tried to give it to some charitable organization but none were found that would accept the responsibility of moving the house off the lot.

"SMOKE SIGNALS"
From the Desk of the Pastor

We're all thankful for the safe return of our first summer mission team. As I've had the chance over the years to listen to the stories of mission teams, two themes seem to emerge regularly. First, there's the "how blessed we are" theme. Any American who visits the "Two-thirds World" will inevitably be struck by how much we take for granted. For example, while our team was in Tanzania, FDM partnered with Living Waters International to drill a well for the Yullansoni village. This marks the first time this village has ever had a year-round local water source! No doubt this is why many persons return on overseas mission trips -- because they realize that they have been blessed in order to be a blessing.

The second consistent report of mission teams is "they gave us much more than we gave them." I have no doubt that this is the other main reason folks return on overseas mission trips - they know that they themselves need it. Experienced missioners know that they will learn things about themselves and about God's kingdom that they could never learn at home, surrounded by the distractions of material prosperity.

So, by all means, corner one of our Tanzania mission team, and let him/her tell you about Tanzania and Full Dimension Ministries (FDM). You'll be blessed. You'll be proud of what MUMC is doing around the world. And you might decide to go experience it for yourself!

Grace & Peace,
Smoke Kanipe
