Spirit Center Construction Progress - December 2008
Finally all of the major underground utility work has been completed. And thank goodness it was ahead of all of this rain. The alley work is underway and should be completed after the first of the year.
The power outage was scheduled prior to Thanksgiving and was completed without any major problem and all heating equipment came back on line and the elevator also came back on line without a problem.
Footings and foundations are being installed between the rain storms to prepare the way for steel erection. Steel erection is scheduled to begin about the first of the year and when the steel is erected the size and scope of the building will begin to be apparent.
Brick for the building has been placed on order and is scheduled to be installed early in March, 2009.
Our Woodshop has been hard at work. They have about completed the cabinet work to be installed in the third floor kitchenette for the youth. Seventeen cabinets were built for the youth room kitchenette.
The Woodshop's next project will be the cabinet work for the classrooms on the second and third floors. There are 11 classrooms and each will need a cabinet for storage that is on casters. The design of this cabinet was done by the Furnishing Committee staff.
Most of the floor covering, colors and moveable partition selections are nearing completion by the Furnishing Committee.
The house that is behind the new Spirit Center, that was our Youth House and is now the construction office, will be acquired by the Church of God Home for Children and will be moved to their site by them after we complete the construction. This area can then become an additional parking area.
We wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year!

"SMOKE SIGNALS"
From the Desk of the Pastor
At this season of stewardship, in the midst of economic
woes, with Thanksgiving and Christmas just around the corner,
the following story, told by Evelyn Smith in Reminisce magazine,
is too good to miss.
"Mother had a lot of faith in God, which she truly needed
in 1933. My sister was a baby, and I wasn't old enough to go to
school. Dad had left us, and the Great Depression was at its
worst. Mom took in washing to make a living...
"[A radio preacher] asked for food donations to be set out
so that his truck could pick them up. Volunteers, he explained,
would sort it all out and deliver baskets to the poorer sections of
town the night before the holiday.
"When Mom heard the request, she immediately strode
into the kitchen and took a jar of home-canned peaches from the
pantry, then set it out on the front porch for the truck to pick up.
The neighbors who saw this told Mom she was too poor to give
away that jar of peaches... But Mom held her ground, and the
peaches stayed on the porch... They were finally picked up a
few days before Thanksgiving.
"On Thanksgiving Eve, as we were getting ready for bed,
there was a knock on our door, and we heard footsteps quickly
leaving. When Mom opened the door, she found a box of food
on our porch. . . There was a freshly dressed chicken, some potatoes,
dried beans, rice, flour, canned pumpkin and - you
guessed it - the jar of peaches Mom had canned herself and
given to [the ministry]. She sat on the floor and cried...
"You can't outgive God, Mom said as she prepared our
meal. You reap what you sow."
Especially at this season of the year, may you and I give
thanks for God's abundant blessings. And may we sow seeds of
compassion, generosity, and
kindness.
Grace & Peace,
Smoke Kanipe
Minister
